The workshop

Made slowly, by hand

Every Ovia piece is made in one of forty small workshops we have visited ourselves. Most are family-run, and none of them make more than a few hundred pieces a year.

A pale oak bench with a linen seat pad in a sunlit room

The right board

We buy timber from forests that are replanted as they are cut, then let every board rest until it stops moving. Sometimes that takes a year.

A round oak dining table with spindle chairs by a window

Joined, not screwed

Tables and chairs are held together with mortise-and-tenon and dowel joints, the way furniture was made to last before flat-pack. They can be taken apart and repaired.

Handmade stoneware vases and bowls on an oak shelf

Thrown and fired

Our ceramics come from potters who throw every piece on the wheel and glaze it by hand, so no two are quite alike.

We would rather make one chair that lasts fifty years than fifty chairs that last one.
